The bill's sponsor, Rep. Bill Deeken, R-Jefferson City, supports the death penalty, but he wants to make sure the system is fair. Snip from the Columbia Missourian:

“If I was on a jury and condemned a person to death, and he was put to death, and I found out five years later that he was not guilty, that would be very hard for me to live with,” Deeken said.

Dennis Fritz, a local guy who was wrongfully convicted in Oklahoma until DNA evidence freed him, spoke in favor of the moratorium. It's sort of a moot point right now since the Supremes have essentially stopped executions nationwide ... until they make their ruling on lethal injection, which could happen later this year. The Missourian says the new MO measure appears to have bipartisan support.
